Adding and Updating Content in your Page

This will give you a walkthrough when adding content to your Brightspace Page such as adding text, images and links.

  • Creating a Page – how to create a page to add content
  • Adding and Editing text – using formatting options like bold, italics, etc
  • Adding Mathematical text – uses various Mathematical Editors such as LaTeX, MathML
  • Adding Images – adding images to your course page
  • Adding Quicklink – linking to other parts of your course within Brightspace
  • Insert Stuff – an alternative quick way to add ‘External Content’ to your course

Once the content has been added to your course page, you return to it, edit, update it.

If you already have existing pages and would simply like to update them, click in how to update course information.
  1. Click on Upload/Create.
  2. Select Create a File
  1. Give your Page a Title.
  2. In the big text box, you can use multiple operations to work with.The text box is identical to any word processing software. You can type in relevant text and use text formatting options such as Bold, Italics and Underline. You can also change the font size, font type and copypaste from other document 
  3. If at any point you prefer to work in hidden mode, so that the students can not see the update, click on Hide from users.
  4. In the bottom bar, there are multiple options:


This will run a spellcheck in the whole page to look for any spelling mistakes. We highly recommend using English (UK) as the language.


To view the HTML Source editor, select this to edit your text in HTML format.


This will give you quick student Preview, to check how the page appears to a student.


This will give you a full screen view to edit your text.


When you paste from a Word document, it might ask you whether you want to keep that formatting, or remove it. In general, we recommend that you Remove the formatting. What this does is it removes the variety of fonts that might be copied across, and just keeps a uniform looking website. This is especially important for mobile devices. If you copy text from a web browser, or some other piece of text that has formatting, in that case we recommend you remove the formatting yourself prior to pasting the content in Brightspace.It will however still retain things such as bulleted lists and font sizing for you. So this is a great way to import content into your Brightspace site without spending a lot of time creating it from scratch..
  1.  Click on the Sigma (Σ) icon. In case the Sigma icon is not visible. first click the  and you will see it show.
  2. By default, clicking on the Sigma (Σ) icon will open a Graphical Equation text editor, where you can directly insert your equation with special characters, style, format, etc.
  3. Select the drop down option next to the Sigma (Σ) icon which will give you access to other equation editors such as MathML and LaTeX equation editor.Read more about how to use LaTeX in Brightspace here
  1. Select Insert Image icon.
  2. Select where your image is available and click on Upload

You can also drag and drop any image from your computer to the page

  1. Select Insert Quicklink icon.
  2. A new pop-up window opens with the list of course materials.
  3. Select the content you wish to hyperlink. Note that it is possible to directly link content modules, submodules and course overviews (if available).
  4. To hyperlink a submodule, click the module were that submodule is included and then click the + sign.
  5. You’ll immediately see your submodule hyperlinked within the text field.

Brightspace offers different ways for making learning more fun and more interesting for students. You may have already seen the External Learning tools to add video’s, links and topic specific tools such as Maple TA and Kaltura.

An alternative quick way to add ‘External Content’ to your course is through Insert Stuff. Insert Stuff allows you to place specific content items, such as specific videos.

  1. Go to your course and the module in which you would like to place the content
  2. Select Upload/Create
  3. Select Create a file
  4. Select the Insert Stuff button:
  5. Select the Learning Tool from which you would like to insert content.
  6. From here, each tool works slightly different but all tools allow you to choose content and then press Select.
  7. The content is placed in the text field of the file.
  8. Add a Title to the file
  9. And select Save and Close or Save to add the file to your course’s content.

Add a description of what this content is, how it fits in the course and what you would like students to do with it. Do they need to read, learn, is it reference material, etc? The clearer you are in describing your expectations, the better the result!

Example description:

‘This video explains and demonstrates the techniques of water harvesting as discussed in the above documents. It will help you to visualize what is meant with a micro-catchment and how to set up a catchment system according to site specific needs.  After watching this video, please answer the questions in Quiz 6.3.2, following this video.’

 Just like with other content, the system allows you to place restrictions, release conditions and dates to the ‘Insert Stuff’ file.
